Persuasive Essay

Question: Does television have a negative influence on society?

Have you ever been sitting at home, thinking you have absolutly nothing to do? Though theres games, and activities laying all over the house that you could do with, maybe a family member, and you end up watching television?
Tv and other technical objects have become a main part of society today. You see people walking down the street, almost always with a phone in their hands, or maybe someone sitting at a restaurant with a laptop placed in front of their faces. Or maybe you have tried talking to someone, but they are to busy with their noses stuck in techno converstations to even bother listening.

Plopping down watching a tv show, or web surfing, or texting, seems to be the way society now spends a day. And the day after that. And the day after that. Repetition. Always the same thing. The same shows play every day. The same people text you, call or email you. How does this stimulate creativity?

People always announce how they are going to start losing weight, or proclaim that they are going to start leading a new, and refreshing life style. But how often do you actually see those advertisments being followed through. They are sometimes labeled as the turning point in someone's life, but they rarely happen.

Imagination has been lost, theres no creative thinking anymore. Like, what would you need to think for when you've got Google, or Discovery Channel, right? .... WRONG! Thats what society is letting run through their minds. Just because you can learn maybe 1 thing if your lucky from watching tv doesnt mean that its good for all the time. Tv erases the need to think, because your mind runs with whats happening on the tv. The mind is a very unique place, but it cant work to its full capacity if its owner is being couch potatoe. Picture a pile of chunky mashed potatoes, with a sickly coloured brown gravy covering it. Thats probably what most people's brains nowadays look like. A brain can only focus on information for so long. When your watching tv, your metaphorically drinking in everything they say, but like most liquids it comes back out again anyways, so then your brain will stop working. Thats where the saying "in through one ear, and out the other" comes in handy. The brain cells will then decrease and prevent thinking later in life.

When you stay in the same place for long periods of time, eating food, and keeping your eyes glued to a "magical" glowing box, you are liable to get hit with a wave of fatigue. You get outta shape. You get lazy and cant get up to do the smallest thing. And worst of all, you get addicted. Its like a wire less signal reeling your brain, you dont wanna stop, you like the shows, you cant stop watching. Well guess what 'Your Highness', you gotta stop sometime. Life doesnt revolve around a liquid crystal sprayed screen full of wires.

Not only all that, but tv is provocative. Even disney movies have little quips in them. Though the children watching do not comprehend that yet, we can. And we do. Tv, and almost every other technological device, in some way "tells" people what they should be like, what they should look like, causing people to start looking at themselves in a different way, and scrutinizing every little thing about themselves that they dont like. HELLO!! Its called airbrushing, people. Yes, maybe some girls do look like the models they show on tv, but its quite hard to find many girls like that. Why? Because the rest are hooked on tv, or too self concious to make a public appearance from the way society has placed them. Everyone should be happy with what they look like. Its always whats on the inside that counts. Dont judge a book by its cover, where has that ever gotten you? Because of tv and stuff people have led themselves to believe that they need to look a certain way to fit in. So, in which case they go get themselves sergically modified to fit in.

The way television influences today's society is quite saddening. And no thanks to McDonalds, its probably getting worse. In conclusion, I think tv reflects negativly on people today. Tv is ok, but not when your addicted to it and definatly, and repeat definatly NOT when its stamping wrong things into an innocent person's mind. But whats right for you? What will YOU decide? The choice, always has been, and ALWAYS will be... yours.

Second Chances

Everything moves on. Life goes by so quickly, that people take for granted the world that they are living in. They take advantage of the small and unnecessary commodities of their existence. Stopping only after something that could alter their lives has occured. An event that could make their heart stop in the burst of adrenaline that coursed through their bodies for that two whole seconds, everything pauses. Everything stops. The other necessaties of life no longer matter. Every person and every being passes by them in a fast colourless blur, the world is just a dull ashen image. Just a picture in a book, with a pearl orb casting an eerie display onto the achromatic sceenery below. Nothing holds anymore interest. Just disappointment, anger, sadness and hurt.

Theres always something in life, whether small or big, that almost everyone regrets. The people that dont wish they could adjust something in their past are wise. They've learned to forget; to forgive. They've taken their mistakes, and turned them into lessons for themselves. Lessons teaching them what hurt feels like, how it penatrates your being. How it tortures your soul. The painful memories sting you over and over again like a swarm of bees ambushing you. Or someone walking around inside your mind, invading personal thoughts you wanted no one to see, and putting them on display for everyone else.

Have you never been there? Have you never had regrets? No ones perfect, theres no need for a show of pride. At least one person you've known throughout your life has seen right through your fake unmarred mask of perfection. They've seen right through your fabricated eyes. Identified the silhouette of a memory you've tried to lock up.

But who cares right? What does it matter that no one else saw right through your phony little mascarade? It was just one person... one person so easily taken care of. Not a soul would know otherwise.

Think through this carefully misguided friend. Would you not regret that later as well? Would you not grieve of something else you have directed into non-existence?

As comprehension dawns on you, like a sunrise rolling over mountain peaks and spilling onto the valley below, you realize that in the duration of your whole existence humanity has given you second chances over again and again... and again. Every individual on this planet deserves a second chance. Whether their hearts are clouded over, and dingy from so many silly mistakes they no longer care about; or shining brightly in the hope that people will admit their mistakes and move on.

People can change. Hearts can alter. Beings can learn to recognize good from wrong. Minds can heal from painful memories. Maybe not forget, maybe not sting a little every now and then, but definatly heal. All in all; people deserve second chances.

Sitting outside on my trampoline I didnt expect it to actually be half decent here. I was so accustomed to the familiar surroundings of Invermere, in the Kootneys. Thinking about all the plesant times I had there I became lost in the past and my eyes became hypnotized by the fluffy little clouds floating serenly along the brilliantly blue sky. Coming to the subject of school I think about how loquacious my friends and I were in class, ticking the teachers off to kingdom come; but for some reason they were never ferociously equipped with the normal antics of some teachers. Its hard not to accentuate my peculiar where abouts. Pin pointing everything I didnt recognize... the new house standing tall against the deep sky. The different locations of the majestic mountians. The vast and never ending surroundings of the wide Okanogan area, the gorgeous lake glittering in the sun's soft rays and the little ripples gently pushing the boats along. The breathtaking display it all creates when put together. I guess I was presumptuous in thinking that I would greatly dislike it here. But then I close my eyes and I'm back to the place I miss so much... back home.

Wild horses project.

As I stand gazing at the sky in an open meadow listening to the thundering of my herd's hooves echoing in the distance, breaking the sun set's peacefulness, I know I can't imagine a better life for me. When I run its like the whole world is with me, the freedom that I know I have is put into action.
I love running and racing against the wind, feeling the blood pulsing through my veins and my hooves pounding the still ground pushing it out behind me, creating more and more speed. Hearing the gentle wind whistle past my all-hearing ears. Seeing the colourful landscape rush past me in a blur. The smell of sweet grass fills my lungs and my tail billowing out behind me like a wind-taken scarf. My mane rips through it in a knotted mass of ripples.
Today we have been wandering slowly through the rocky mountains and open meadows of British Columbia. Aliens to a foreign place, we search for a place to settle for the expectantly cool night; sniffing out the peculiar things we have never encountered before.
Its been hard for me and my family lately. Forced to leave our homeland in Nevada from a wildfire set by the hands of man in their attempts to get rid of us. Why do they not like us? What have we ever done wrong? All we ask for is a little water to keep us going, that is not to much ... is it?
I ponder this all the time. The only thing that drives these haunting thoughts from my mind is the wind in my face... Not today though. Its been different. Coming into the mountains, after hard and laborious travel,we come across predators we did not expect; that we did not give a second thought to.
The trees tear at our thin fur as we struggle up the steep, rocky paths. The sharp little pebbles grind into our hooves, and the exertion of the past few weeks is catching up on us. Then nervous nickers sound from up farther. I can feel the other horses' fear rolling off them in waves as i trudge along behind, and I start getting uneasy as well; their fear, my fear.
I hear a stick crack silently, and apparently so did everyone else. As one, the panic sets in and we all start at a full blown gallop. Winding our way through the thick forests, and finally coming out at an open space. That's when I felt something pursuing me... fast. Knowing that I need to protect my family at all costs I veer off to the right as they race straight ahead. Still pursuing me, I can see the mountain lion in my peripheral vision, getting ready to spring. I push myself harder, willing my aching legs on, and my lungs to breathe the thin air.

Suddenly the enormous cat bunches into a giant ball of rough fur and springs with power and agility accentuating every part of it. Everything seems to be going in slow motion now; the fierce animal suspended in mid-air, claws ready to grasp onto me, but apparently the huge feline forgot the dangers of hooves. With almighty force I strike out to kill; to protect. Accompanying a roar of terror and rage the mighty beast thuds to the earth at my feet. No longer a threat to me and my family.
After I finish letting my mind race through the adventures of earlier today I come back to the present. Apparently while I was reminiscing the sun went to bed. The sky a dull navy blue running down into a deep purple right behind the majestic mountains, that tower over everything, and the little white points shining through a blanket of darkness lighting up the world with its companion, the moon. All is peaceful. The crickets chirp their midnight lullaby. My herd drifts off to sleep. The gentle breeze whistling through the grass and dancing through the trees. What better life is out there? Nothing can beat the feeling of belonging and freedom that night brings. Absolutely nothing.
The End
